A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN ASL JOB COACH

As an ASL Job Coach you provide essential direct supported employment services to adults with disabilities. In order to help them maintain competitive employment in the community, you participate in job site & task analyses, job matches, intensive on-the-job training, fading, and documentation. You ensure the service recipients successful integration into the work environment, gradually fading their dependence. You keep clear, accurate, and up-to-date records at all times. When necessary, you assist in transportation.

As a collaborative member of the team, you also participate in the development of goal-setting process as well as maintain open and honest communications with the Supported Employment Team. You provide each service recipient's work schedule to the residential staff and coordinators. You always advocate for the best interests of the service recipient, behaving in a professional and respectful manner at all times. As an advocate, you educate the public, employers, co-workers, and the general public about supported employment. You are always working to improve and update your job coaching methods and find the work of supporting people with developmental disabilities to live fulfilling lives according to their own needs and abilities extremely rewarding!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide on-the-job coaching and support to clients, including job training and adjustment services, to ensure successful employment.
  • Utilize ASL to communicate effectively with deaf and hard-of-hearing clients, employers, and colleagues.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local employers to create job opportunities for clients.
  • Monitor and report on clients' progress, challenges, and successes.

ABOUT ABILITY AND CHOICE SERVICES, INC. (ACS)

Family-owned since 1987, we operate a social and community access hub in Salt Lake and Tooele Counties along with integrated employment supports and in-home care for adults with developmental disabilities. Our day program serves as a community gathering hub for participants to socialize, learn life skills, and access the greater community with their peers. Our participants (along with staff) enjoy going to community assets such as parks, the zoo, the aquarium, the movies, volunteering, and bowling--as well as taking semi-annual field trips to destinations such as Wendover and Boondocks.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A JOB COACH / EMPLOYMENT SPECIALIST

  • 18+ years old
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English
  • Fluent in ASL
  • Clean criminal record (no history of abuse, exploitation, or other related offenses on the Medicaid Exclusion list or any felony in the last 10 years)
  • Ability to pass periodic drug testing
  • Good driving record and reliable personal transportation
  • Obtain/posses a CPR/first aid card, and a local food handlers permit
  • Able to use and operate a laptop and smart phone (company issued)
  • Ability to safely lift 50 lbs.
  • A heart for serving people with developmental disabilities
  • Able to present a professional appearance appropriate for a variety of 3rd party employment environments
  • Having an ACRE SE or Workplace Supports certification is helpful, but not necessary

WORK SCHEDULE

Supports for this position may occur anytime during a 24-hour day, depending on the needs of the individuals served, but generally is during normal office or retail hours.
